If you are a newbie to the social media scene, and are wondering which of the many sites is right for you, you’ve come to the right place. We will take a look at each one, what they are primarily for, and what benefit they offer you.

Twitter is a social media network where members can send short messages to their followers, called tweets, to let people know for the most part what they feel, let them know what they are doing, or where they stand on issues of the day. Many famous people have accounts here, where tens of thousands of people follow them daily. If you have a large following, who hang on your every word and action, this is the place for you.

Facebook is the largest social media network, with billions of members. This is the place to connect with family, former classmates, and long-lost friends. It is also a great place to get in some heated political and religious debates.

Looking for a place where you can easily share online photos? Instagram can do that and much more. You can also share videos and post them to your other social media accounts. If you are a budding photographer, this is the place for you.

Another photo sharing web site, Pinterest is a free web site that allows users to upload all sorts of images – known as pins – and save, sort, and manage them. Videos can also be uploaded and managed. People here organize their “pinboards” most often on a central theme. This is another site ideal for those who love photography and art.

Google Plus is a social network owned and operated by the search engine giant. Launched in 2011, this is one social media site that has been slow to catch on with their millions of users.

The only business social media site of the ones explored here, LinkedIn is the place where business professionals go to look for work, and find qualified people for job openings. LinkedIn has close to 350 million users in over 200 countries around the world. Linkedin expanded their offerings recently when they acquired Lynda.com. Now users of Linkedin have access to the 3,500 educational videos that can teach news skills in technology, business, software, creative skills, and more.

LinkedIn is a public company with shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “LNKD.” With the recent acquisitions, LinkedIn looks to be the place to go for years to come for those seeking technical and business jobs, and those looking to recruit talent for their business.
